What do we evaluate when rating a Theme?

1- Appearance

All graphical visual elements such as: colors, fonts, icons, style, composition, etc.

2- Speed

Theme speed:  speed of menus, tabs, slideshows, photo gallery, etc. and overall response time and mouse actions on the theme.

3- Features

Useful built-in features: Widget, Menus, Photo/Video Gallery, Music Player, Slideshow, Mobile Compatibility, Tabs, Built-in Related Posts, Built-in Contact Form, Google Map, Social Sharing Icons, Social Networks, SEO friendly, etc. and additionally we evaluate the overall intended purpose of the theme vs the included built-in features.

4- Support

When evaluating “Support” the most important factor in rating “Support” is response time to questions and of course the quality of the response.  Other factors in evaluating “Support” are:  professionalism, politeness, courteousness, useful information provided, etc.  The Support evaluation takes into consideration accessibility options such as:  toll free numbers, Live Chat, but these accessibility options do not increase or decrease a Support evaluation rating.

5- User Ratings (star ratings, thumbs up, etc)

We check WordPress.org Star Ratings and other sources where User Ratings can be found.  We also consider user ratings and comments on our website.

6- Our Rating

Typically one or two members of our team will rate themes.

7- Overall Value

Overall Value is assessed by evaluating the following:  features, overall appearance, speed, ease of setup, overall usefulness and product support.

What do we evaluate when rating a Plugin?

1- Features

We evaluate the amount of options that are available to users in the plugin such as does the plugin have a sufficient number of options to fully perform all the tasks that the plugin is designed for and are there options they should be added to the plugin.

2- Usefulness

Does the plugin enhance a website’s appearance, functionality, performance, etc.  for both admins and frontend visitors to the site.

3- Easy to Setup

Is the plugin installation and setup fully automated or does it require manual configuration steps.  Is configuring the plugin installation and setup straightforward, intuitive, logical and well documented.  If a plugin is difficult to install, setup and configure we take into consideration these other factors: are video tutorials available, are there other help resources that have step by step setup and manual configuration instructions and other help resources available to compensate for the lack automation in installation, setup and configuration of a plugin.

When evaluating “Support” for free plugins we look at any support pages, help pages, forum pages, WordPress forum pages, etc.

When evaluating “Support” for Premium/Paid plugins we send an email (using a 3rd party email account – not the themesplugins.com domain) to the plugin developer with some questions and we evaluate the overall response time and the quality of the response.

5- User Ratings (star ratings, thumbs up, etc)

We check WordPress.org Star Ratings and other sources where User Ratings can be found.  We also consider user ratings and comments on our website.

6- Our Rating

7- Overall Value

Overall Value is assessed by evaluating the following:  features, overall appearance, speed, ease of setup, overall usefulness and product support.

Will we change our rating if a theme or plugin has made significant changes or improvements?

Yes, we do change our rating for themes and plugins that have made significant changes or improvements.  If a plugin or theme is in review or a plugin or theme is removed from our website then you will see this message on our website “Item is temporary down or no longer available”.  This message will most likely be temporary until a new review can be posted or the theme or plugin is removed from our site.

If a new version of a plugin or theme is released then we will check to see what changes and/or new features were added.  If the plugin or theme is considered to be a Minor release then we will not reevaluate and review it.  If the plugin or theme is considered a Major release then we will perform a new review and evaluation.

NOTE:  Overall ratings of a plugin or theme can change based on feedback and comments that we receive from users who report their personal experiences with plugin’s and theme’s.

Most of the plugins and themes are rated very high. Why is that?

We only post reviews and ratings for the best plugins and themes that we have evaluated, reviewed and rated.  If the plugin or theme does not meet the minimum overall rating standards (5 for themes, 2.5 for plugins) then we do not post a review or rating for that plugin or theme.

ThemesPlugins.com Rating and Review Standards

We do our absolute best to maintain complete accuracy, fairness and unbiased ratings and reviews.  We cannot guarantee that a plugin or theme will work without any issues or problems on every single website, Web Host or Server environment.  Our testing environment is a standard Shared hosting account that the majority of folks would also have.  In general, a plugin or theme should be designed to work the same on almost every type of Hosting account or Server environment.

Recommendations:  Before purchasing a theme or plugin you should check the plugin’s or theme’s help documentation to ensure that it will work fine with your particular Hosting Account type and Server environment (configuration).  You can also contact the Developer of the theme or plugin directly and provide your Hosting and Server environment information to the developer.
